Open Water Scuba Certification With Royal Caribbean Overview
I completed the PADI Open Water Diver Course with Royal Caribbean on board the Harmony of the Seas. It was not exactly what I expected, so let's break it down.
The course is the same as you would do at any dive shop, but a little more expensive and on the move. The course only affected activities we wanted to do on the day we got on board, the rest of the planned course material was either in the morning or at the ports which worked out well.
After you sign up there is only one document you are waiting to complete before you can start your course. For us getting the medical form and receiving the code for the course turned out to be emailing from every other day and CCing as many people as possible to get any communication back.
We had about 6 days to complete the online course which was possible, we simply didn't have a life after work :) We spent about 4 hours a night for 6 days straight to complete the materials, take the quizzes, and the final exam. They do have a few extra sections we did complete as well.
Once we got on board we were told to visit the PADI center between 1-4pm; we did but also had to come back at 4pm to complete the first gear training -- right during sail-away which led us to be late for dinner. Just plan to not have a 5pm dinner reservation :)
Even tho your cruise planner will say 7am, confined dives will start at 6am. We completed our confined dives in the Sports Pool. The pool is about four and a half feet deep, much shallower than the pools that most dive shops use.
With the pools being shallow you don't get the chance to try and equalize your ears, practice descending and it makes turning with fins harder among other items you need to practice like water entrances that you will do for the first time in the open water dives.
Our confined dive was about 6:30am to 9am with prep time before and communication after. We only had access to the pool till 9am which was enough time to go through everything. This two-and-a-half-hour period in the water was combining our confined dives 1, 2, 3, and 4 together.
All your gear is provided but can be in rough shape and falling apart. We only had 3 people in our group but it was still challenging to find gear that fit everyone. Most of the wetsuits were falling apart and the Velcro on the BCDs was either missing or not sticking leading them to move around the the water. If you are smaller it might be hard to find fins and a wetsuit that fits you as it should.
You will have to collect all your gear the day before your first open-water dive and bring it down to your stateroom, it will stay with you until after your last open-water dive.
Our first and second open-water dives happened in Roatán, Honduras. We joined a group that was doing the World Class Certified Dive With Anthony's Key - $139, while we didn't go with the group on the dive we went on the boat with them. The entrance was a giant step and anchored to a mooring line so we descended and moved over to the line for our descent. We dove at two locations and changed tanks between them. We were down for about 30 mins each time about 10 mins less than the group we were with.
Our third and fourth open-water dives happened in Cozumel, Mexico. We took a dive boat over to Sand Dollar Sports with basically the same group as the previous dive. While we all got off and got our weights we stayed there while everyone else got back on the boat for a drift dive.
For dives three and four we used only one tank and never got out between the dives. This was a shore dive and shallower than in Roatán. We completed the rest of the test and then did basically a free dive as we would from now on.
After we completed this we had to do our 200 meter swim to complete the testing.
While this course did cost more than at a dive shop we were able to dive at two completely different locations and the time commitment was minimal on the cruise. We spent a maximum 5 hours onboard with the majority of the time before others woke up. While it was a pain to get the code and crammed to understand the information I was able to pass all the exams with 100% and apply it to the dives.

    Thanks for showing both rooms but what room did you guys end up traveling in? i heard at the end that you said "we both slept on the bottom bunk". Was that in the roomette or the bedroom? Thanks

    Thanks so much. I’ve signed up for this for May. I’m going to give them awhile longer to answer my questions but since I won’t have time to cram closer to my cruise time, your experience about them getting the info to study very far in advance is very valuable to me.

    I am looking into this for my 23 year old on our March 2025 Odyssey cruise. I will share this with him. Not sure he will like the last minute cramming since it will be his senior year in college and this spring break trip will probably be right after mid terms so he might not be able to focus on the scuba prework. I thought they gave you several weeks to complete the work. 🤔

      You will have fun! It open a whole new community and world of opportunities! As for studying, I would have expected and hopping the same thing since our instructor reached out to both of us individually about a month before but that just wasn't the case for us.

      The bedrooms have definitely gone up in price in the last several years, there's always the roomette that's slightly cheaper but those are still pricey compared to a plane ticket for the same place. You can look at the annual pass, that might help bring down some of the cost.

    My wife and I took the empire builder from Portland to Chicago, and didn't buy any sleeper cars. It was comfortable enough, more roomy than a plane. But next time we are surely getting a sleeper car.

    Good video Chris. It seems that we need 1000 subscribers for this to work since that's the UA-cam requirement for mobile devices. It would be interesting to know if a workaround exists.

    • @ChrisFlaten
      @ChrisFlaten Рік тому

      When you use a stream key you are not using a mobile device so this limit doesn't exist. You just need to have your phone number verified in the account settings like you do for videos over 15 mins.

    hi, can we also use a third party streaming software for rtmp like obs or prism live studio?

    • @ChrisFlaten
      @ChrisFlaten Рік тому

      If you are doing it wirelessly using the RTMP connection you need a RTMP server to connect to. You can create a local RTMP server on your computer or a device like a Synology NAS.

    Thanks for the video! Question lets say I am streaming to UA-cam using an IRL set up of a camera, encoder and a mobile router. If I turn on the drone live stream feature from DJI Fly app, WHILE i am already in a UA-cam live, will that switch scenes to the drone until I turn off the drone and then will it go back to my camera? Trying to figure out how to switch between a camera IRl stream view to a drone and back.

  • @dougt8215

    The DJI FPV doesn't have this feature enabled in the DJI Fly app. On mine, it just doesn't show up in the app for the DJI Fly drone, even if it does for the other DJI drones shown. So the title of this video is misleading.

      You can, but don’t have to. The stream key and url are saved so you can stream to the same place again. This works well on UA-cam and most private servers. So no reconfiguring, you can start a stream in a few seconds.

    I have been in a roomette and think it is just fine. One thing to remember is that the bedroom has you sleeping perpendicular to the tracks while you are sleeping parallel to the tracks in a roomette. Many people in a bedroom complain that-as the car pitches from side-to-side, they feel as if they are on a ship on the ocean with their head & feet going up & down as opposed to being rocked side-to-side in a roomette........

    Traveling by train on Amtrak in 1st class is great for those who're not in a hurry or bore easily, don't mind sleeping & maneuvering in tight spaces, looking at outdated & worn out upholstery & equipment, paying about as much as a 1st class plane ticket, maybe more, no WiFi or cell service in certain remote areas. It's more of a relaxed mode of travel where you can see scenic areas cars don't travel. You meet & actually talk with folks who aren't on edge & they're friendly, you're not driving a car, & you can really unwind. All trains are non-smoking & smoke stops could take hours. Long distance train travel is not for everyone & a room can be very pricey. Those traveling in coach overnight find it incredibly comfortable & affordable, but cars can be noisy, even at night with folks coming & going or babies crying. Some are forced to sit with people they don't know when trains are heavily booked in coach class. Paying for the privacy & quiet of a room makes a train trip worthwhile & memorable. And all meals are included in the price of a 1st class ticket.
